The
Legislature is in Session
The Legislative Session has started off fast and furious. In fact there have been 243 bills introduced between the House and the Senate as of Tuesday. The Chamber took position on four bills in the first week. These bills
included SB-01, which the Governmental Affairs Committee voted to oppose. The three
bills the committee voted to support are: SB-35,
SB-27 and
HB-1005. The Chamber tracks a number of bills and updates the bill tracking sheet regularly, if there is a bill that your business would like us to track, please let us know. To see a complete list of the bills we are tracking,

Energy
Briefings
Energy Briefings for the new year have begun at the Chamber. Wednesday morning, the Chamber had the opportunity to participate in a presentation by Energy Fuels Resources Corp., who received a permit to build the first new uranium mill in over 25 years. The building of the mill will bring an estimated 85 jobs at the mill site, and cost over $150 million to build, all in support of Western Colorado. To read more,

Business
and Education=500 Plan
In his State of the Union address, President Obama mentioned how other countries such as China are educating their children earlier in subjects like Math and Science. This coincides with the report that was recently released that the children in our country are not performing well in the areas of Science. To read

The Grand Junction Forum, a Chamber committee, and Mesa County Valley School District took a long view on building community assets including a world class education. The plan is to add 500 volunteers to work with elementary student for one hour a week on Wednesday afternoons.

Cabinet
Appointees Named
With the beginning of the legislative session came the confirmation hearings of
Governor Hickenlooper’s Cabinet Appointees. The sessions have been moving along fairly smoothly with Ellen Golombek, the nominee to run the Department of Labor and Employment taking the heat from Republican lawmakers. Read more
